Water Division Engineering Aide


The City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Public Works Department, Water Division, is conducting a search for Water Division Engineering Aide.  Working under the direction of the Water Division Superintendent, the individual in this position will be responsible for performing sub-professional engineering work on the water system components.  Specific duties include, but not limited to, cross-connection surveys, maintaining backflow prevention program, meter surveys, and inspection of various system components.  Assist Water Division Engineer in the inspection of system components under construction.  A high school diploma, or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must have four (4) years of experience in construction, plumbing or drafting.

JOB TITLE:                           Water Division Engineering Aide


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  Public Works Department/Water Division


PAY GRADE/HOURS:          Grade T5B  /  40-hour work week


UNION:                                  Local 3851/Professional and Technical


POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Water Division Superintendent, the Water Division Engineering Aide performs sub-professional engineering work on the water system components.  This includes, but not limited to, cross-connection surveys, maintaining backflow prevention program, meter surveys, and inspection of various system components.  Assist Water Division Engineer in the inspection of system components under construction, and does related work as required.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspects, prepares field notes and reports on water system component.
  • Under the direction of the Water Engineer, enforces division specifications and rules and regulations.
  • Performs backflow prevention surveys, meter surveys and maintains records.
  • Makes simple schematic drawings and does simple drafting.
  • Helps maintain accurate water system grids, card files and computer files.
  • Understands and carries out oral and written instructions.
  • Investigates complaints and makes reports.
  • Under supervision, does simple design of meter and backflow prevention installation.
  • Attends training seminars and classes as required.
  • Assists in the administration of Division wide confined space entry program.
  • Perform other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required, and any combination of four (4) years experience in construction, plumbing or drafting.  Formal education in engineering or drafting will be substituted on a year-for-year basis.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Thorough knowledge of pertinent codes, regulations, laws and ordinances.  Ability to prepare and read maps, schematics and drawings.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in writing and oral skills.  Ability to make detailed notes and sketches; ability to deal effectively and courteously with people; tact, thoroughness, integrity, initiative, and good judgment.
