PLUMBING/MECHANICAL INSPECTOR


The City of Woonsocket is looking for a Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector.  Reporting to the Director of Planning & Development and the Building Official, the person in this position is responsible for the conformity of all pertinent ordinance and regulations related to all residential and business installations, as well as the repair and alteration of all plumbing fixtures and plumbing mechanical systems completed in the City of Woonsocket.  Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:  the review of all drawings and specifications of all plumbing applications, the issuance of permits and complaints of all plumbing violations.  Inspections of all new and updated plumbing installations.  Must have a high school diploma, or GED equivalent, along with five (5) years of prior experience as a plumber or plumbing contractor.  Must possess a thorough knowledge of all plumbing-related ordinances and regulations.  Must also possess a Rhode Island Master Plumbers and Pipe Fitter License, a Journeyman Contractors and a Plumbers License.  Must be certified by as a Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector by the State of Rhode Island’s Building Code Standards Committee.  The person in this position is expected to maintain a his/her State certification through the duration of employment with the City of Woonsocket.

JOB TITLE:                           Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  Planning and Development Department/Zoning, Building Inspection & Construction Division


PAY GRADE/HOURS/PLAN: Grade TBD / 40-hour work week


UNION:                                  Non-Union/Non-Classified Plan


POSITION SUMMARY:  Under supervision of the Director of Planning & Development and the Building Official, serves as the Plumbing/Mechanical Inspector in the Division of Building Inspection, and does related work as required.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews drawings and specifications for plumbing/mechanical permit applications; issues permits for plumbing work; inspects installations, alteration, and repair of plumbing/mechanical systems to ensure conformity with pertinent ordinances and regulations.
  • Inspects for quality of workmanship of plumbing/mechanical installations and modifications; investigates complaints and reported unsanitary conditions due to faulty plumbing; examines plumbing/mechanical plans and specifications for code compliance and advises as to the indicated changes necessary for the issuance of permits and corrections of deficiencies.
  • Answers inquiries and complaints and makes proper reports.
  • Performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent is required.  Must have five (5) years of experience as a plumber or plumbing contractor.  Must possess a current Rhode Island Master Plumbers and Pipe Fitter License or Journeyman Contractors and Plumbers License.  Additional compensation will be provided to those applicants who also possess a Master Refrigeration License.  Must be certified (or be certifiable) as plumbing/mechanical inspector by the State of Rhode Island building code standards committee and fulfill all continued education requirements to maintain State certification.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the plumbing trade and related mechanical trades; good knowledge of ordinances regulations and code requirements pertaining to plumbing/mechanical installations and sanitary requirements.  Good knowledge of plumbing/mechanical materials, supplies, and equipment.  Ability to interpret plans and specifications; ability to deal effectively and courteously with people; tact, thoroughness, good judgment, and keen observation.
