MEDIUM EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

(Highway & Parks Division)

The City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island is conducting a search for a Medium Equipment Operator.  Working under the direction of the Director of Public Works, the person in this position will be responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of motorized equipment used for construction, as well as street and sidewalk repairs.  Operating of heavy equipment as needed.  The person in this position must possess a CDL and a Hoisting Engineering License to operate a backhoe.  Must have at least one (1) year prior machine operating experience.

JOB TITLE:     Medium Equipment Operator (Highway & Parks)

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:     Public Works Department/Public Service Division

PAY GRADE/HOURS:     Grade M62B  /  40-hour work week

UNION:     Local 670, RI Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under general supervision, the Medium Equipment Operator operates specialized motor equipment requiring some training and skill; and does related work as required.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Operates street sweeper, front-end loader and similar medium street cleaning equipment, construction equipment and maintenance equipment.
• Operates light trucks and other light street cleaning equipment, and construction equipment.
• Drives heavy equipment on occasion.
• Performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled maintenance work while not operating equipment.
• Makes adjustments and minor repairs to equipment operated and service equipment.
• Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must have two (2) years practical experience in the operation of motor equipment; one (1) year as a light equipment operator for the City is preferred.  Must possess a CDL license.  A Hoisting Engineering License is required in order to operate a backhoe.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the equipment to be operated and maintenance requirements, and geography of the City of Woonsocket and traffic regulations.  Skilled in the operation of light and specialized motor equipment, mechanical ability, carefulness, resourcefulness; and physical strength.
