JUNIOR LIBRARY ASSISTANT


The City of Woonsocket is conducting a search for a Junior Library Assistant.  Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the Junior Library Assistant supports the patrons of the Harris Public Library by performing the following tasks:  direct service at circulation desk, inputs patron registrations, responds to patron inquiries either in person or by telephone, searches for lost or overdue items, verifies and processes various library materials, and performs other duties as assigned.  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required.  Experience in municipal government and/or a library, is preferred.  Must be able to deal effectively and courteously with the patrons.  A minimum typing rate of thirty-five (35) words per minute as determined through a test administered by the RI Department of Labor & Training, or similar typing, is required.

Weekly Rate:              $709.66/week  to  $754.07/week      [M16]

Hours of Work:          35.0 hours per week

JOB TITLE:                              Junior Library Assistant


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:   Legislative Department/Board of Library Trustees Division


PAY GRADE/HOURS:            Grade M16  /  35-hour work week


UNION:                                      Local 670, RI Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO


POSITION SUMMARY:   Under the direction of the Senior Library Assistant or Circulation Aide, the Junior Library Assistant performs routine library service tasks, and does related work as required.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides direct service to patrons at circulation desk.
  • Executes various responsibilities relating to the automated circulation system.
  • Inputs patron registration.
  • Checks for loss of circulation and overdue items.
  • Orders, verifies and process various library material.
  • Performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must be an experienced rapid and accurate typist.  Experience in municipal government and/or a library, preferably.  Must be able to deal effectively and courteously with the patrons.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Ability to participate effectively in the areas of library responsibility; must possess excellent organizational skills; ability to communicate clearly and concisely; ability to easily meet and deal with people with tact, friendliness, and overall approachability; ability to handle stress; ability to exercise good judgment.
