HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (Highway)


The City of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, Public Works Department, is conducting a search for a Heavy Equipment Operator.  Working under the direction of the Highway Division Superintendent, this individual will be responsible for operating heavy and specialized motorized equipment that requires specialized skills in a safe manner.  Specific equipment includes, but is not limited to bulldozers, forklifts, backhoes, bucket trucks, front end loaders, cranes and/or heavy grading machines used for street repair and maintenance and snowplows to clear City streets during the winter season.  The person in this position is also required to assists in the routine maintenance of all the equipment mentioned above, supervise laborers in connection with their work around all equipment mentioned above, as well as perform unskilled and semi-skilled labor work when not working on any equipment.  A high school diploma, or GED equivalent, is required.  In addition, the individual in this position must possess a CDL license, with four (4) years of demonstrated experience in the operation of heavy and specialized motorized equipment.

JOB TITLE:                         Heavy Equipment Operator (Highway)


DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:  Public Works Department/Public Service Division


PAY GRADE/HOURS:          Grade M51 / 40-hour work week


UNION:                                  Local 670, RI Council 94, AFSCME, AFL-CIO


POSITION SUMMARY:  Under general supervision, the Heavy Equipment Operator operates heavy and specialized motorized equipment requiring special training and skill, and does related work as required.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates a bull dozer, fork lift, backhoe, bucket truck, crane or a heavy grader in street repair, maintenance and cleaning work.
  • Operates front-end loaders, snow plow, trucks and other motor equipment when required.
  • Maintains and repairs motor equipment with assistance from equipment mechanic.
  • Supervises laborers in work connected with equipment operation.
  • Performs semi-skilled and unskilled labor work when not operating equipment.
  • Perform work from a bucket truck as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.


QUALIFICATIONS:  A high school diploma or a GED equivalent, is required.  Must have four (4) years of practical experience in the operation of motorized equipment; preferably and two (2) years of service as a light or medium equipment operator with the City.  Must possess a CDL License.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES:  Thorough knowledge of the geography of the city and traffic regulations; good knowledge of the equipment to be operated and its maintenance requirements.  Skilled in the operation of heavy and specialized motor equipment of the type to be operated, mechanical ability, and carefulness.
