Director of Finance

Position Summary: This position oversees the day-to-day operations of the Finance department, focusing on operational control and internal financial management, with a team of 3-4 direct reports. The position is required to manage cash flow, prepare comprehensive financial reports, prepare and monitor organizational budget, serve as liaison to auditors, and ensure proper procedures are followed. The Director will play a critical role in supporting senior leadership in decision-making and operational effectiveness, helping the organization strengthen its programming and build internal capacity. This is a key leadership role that requires a dynamic leader to ensure financial sustainability and operational efficiency within a high-impact, mission-driven organization.  Public and/or non-profit accounting experience required, CPA experience, or working toward CPA, preferred.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  Financial Management

Develop and implement financial strategies that support the organization’s mission and goals.

Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

  • Provide direct supervision to department staff; use both individual supervision and team meeting strategies to ensure success.

Ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial systems.

Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits, and other reporting requirements.

Establish and maintain internal control systems and adjust as needed based on compliance findings.

Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO, CPO, and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations as needed.

Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers.

Ensure that monthly invoices for grant funded programs are produced--including proof of payment; track cumulative spending on each grant.

  Budgeting and Forecasting

Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with program managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets.

Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the CEO, CPO, and Board of Directors.

Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term financial planning and decision-making.

  Planning and Leadership

Work closely with the CEO, CPO, and program leaders to develop and implement plans and goals that support the organization’s mission and vision.

Staff the Finance Committee, collaborating with other committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization.

Provide leadership and mentorship to the finance team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

  Board Relations and Reporting

Report on the financial performance of the organization to the Board of Directors, including regular updates on budget performance, forecasts, and financial risks and opportunities.

Collaborate with the CEO, CPO, and Board of Directors to develop and implement financial policies and procedures that align with the organization’s values and strategic goals.

Represent the organization at internal and external events and meetings, providing financial guidance and support as needed.

  Tax Filing and Compliance

Oversee all tax filings and compliance requirements, ensuring that the organization is in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Manage relationships with external auditors and other financial service providers to ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements.

  Administration

Ensure the integration of technology solutions to improve operational efficiency, including the management of relationships with software vendors.

Oversee administrative functions and office operations, ensuring they support the organization’s growth and scalability.

Serve as the main point of contact with external financial partners, including third-party vendors, consultants, and brokers.

  Operational Leadership

Lead the monitoring and tracking of grant spending and ensure timely invoicing for grant-funded programs.

Provide strategic oversight and analysis of financial performance, including salary, benefit, and cost allocations, and monitor financial impacts of union contract negotiations.

Present financial reports at Finance Committee and Board of Directors meetings, providing detailed explanations of financial health and risks.

Supervise department staff, fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.

Manage employee benefit plan renewals, support payroll processing, and ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsible for the oversight of the fiscal management files. Ensure record keeping functions are in compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.

  Additional Duties

  • Ensure agency registrations and reporting with Federal, state, and local regulatory agencies (for example, RI Secretary of State, IRS, SAM.gov and Grants.gov) ensuring compliance with federal, state and local funding requirements.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field; MBA/CPA preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of financial management experience in manager or director role, ideally within a nonprofit organization.[ME1]
  • Extensive experience in managing financial operations, grants, and audits, with demonstrated success in financial planning and reporting.
  • Proven ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for senior leadership and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Experience with financial management software and technology systems; proficiency in accounting software and reporting tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage cross-functional teams and collaborate with senior leadership on strategic decision-making.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • A high level of integrity, professionalism, and dedication to the mission and values of Coastline EAP and Rhode Island Student Assistance Services.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience in grants management and reporting.
  • Knowledge of federal and state compliance requirements, particularly in relation to nonprofit operations.
  • Expertise in managing external audits and relationships with auditors.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, including working with board members, vendors, consultants, and external partners.
  • A proactive, hands-on approach to leadership, with a focus on continuous improvement and operational excellence. 

Salary:  $98,000 - $110,000, plus a very generous benefit package
